OVH at CES 2017: supporting innovation, this is our mission

For the second consecutive year, OVH is attending the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The fiftieth edition of the event takes place on the 5th to 8th of January, and has become the world showcase of technological innovation in all sectors. Octave Klaba, founder and CTO of OVH, flew to Nevada with the Digital Launch Pad teams. CES is a chance to spot emerging trends and the subsequent needs in terms of hosting and data processing. It is also the ideal place to reaffirm the European Cloud leader's commitment to supporting innovative projects and especially to the startups in the 137 countries where OVH customers reside.

French Tech in full force

An essential event for companies wishing to launch a product, meet distributors, attract investors and get spotted by the international press (more than 6,900 accredited journalists attended in 2016!), today CES is a show that OVH cannot afford to miss. As the top ranking fundraiser in 2016 for "French Tech" (an initiative supporting startups), the European Cloud leader is attending as a partner of Business France in order to support "French Tech" businesses. These young companies make up the second largest group within Eureka Park, the exposition space dedicated to startups. At the core of the next industrial revolution, IoT will once again be one of the major focal point of CES 2017. And the Internet of Things, whether B to C (especially for making homes smarter) or B to B (for equipping factories of the future) has turned out to be an area of excellence for French companies.

The Digital Launch Pad programme already supports 500 startups

CES is an opportunity to highlight the Digital Launch Pad teams, the programme that supports startups which OVH launched in 2015. The Parisian company, Plume Labs will attend CES to present its personal sensor which detects exposure to pollution. The 500th startup to be supported by the Digital Launch Pad, it has already attracted investments to the tune of 4 million euros. This is a symbolic milestone, which demonstrates OVH’s commitment to supporting projects with high potential and based on cloud technologies. OVH achieves this by providing free scalable infrastructures in order to reduce the time to market for the startup's solution.

Personal project, an investment fund

Octave Klaba has always maintained the startup spirit of the company that he created in 1999 and which has since become a worldwide business with 1,500 employees. The face of the only non-American global cloud provider, Octave has managed investments for startups specialising in IaaS and PaaS services and is now considering personally creating an investment fund. IaaS and PaaS make up the two layers of the Cloud which are superimposed on the physical servers providing a turnkey environment for developers and companies to host their projects.

The explosion of data, the hidden side of CES

In 2013, we thought it would be fun to calculate the cumulative height of OVH servers when stacked on top of each other. This was equivalent to 20 times the Eiffel Tower. Today, the 260,000 OVH servers available to customers globally would equal the height of 35 Eiffel Towers (or 70 X the height of the replica Eiffel Tower which stands in front of the Paris Las Vegas hotel-casino, half the height of the original). And this height is going to continue to grow even faster with new datacentres being delployed all over the world. If the objects presented at CES constitute the visible part of technical innovation, the hidden part is even more impressive. It’s in the datacentres which house the exponential volumes of data, generated by IoT - connected cars, 360° photos and videos, etc. that amaze the show's visitors. The research firm, IDC predicted in 2014 that the Internet of Things would contribute to “doubling the size of the digital universe every two years." We may get there faster than expected. It's enough to make your head spin, but no need to worry, OVH has you covered. Enjoy CES!
